Making Democracy Work

Make Democracy Work!

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan organization encouraging informed and active participation in government. We influence public policy through education and advocacy. We invite men and women to join us!

We have chosen the following three topics as our priorities for action and advocacy for 2014-2015.

-  Economic Justice, including issues of poverty, the social safety net, economic inequality, hunger, homelessness, meeting basic needs, equal opportunity, the wealth gap in Contra Costa, the minimum wage, and a living wage.

- Climate Change at the Local Level,  including sustainability, resiliency, sea level rise, new oil storage and refining, the northern waterfront economic revitalization, local water issues and conservation, and new fuel and energy sources.

- Education, including the new Common Core Standards and Curriculum, the LWVC's Higher Education Study, pre-school and transitional kindergarten, parenting classes, after school programs, drop-out and truancy prevention, and the school to prison pipeline including suspension and expulsion.

In addition, we will be working on the LWV California priority issues of Money in Politics, Education and Water, and the LWV United States focus on key structures of American democracy (campaign finance, constitutional amendments and Congressional redistricting).

Please let us know if you would like to participate in our activities on these issues.
